Fig. 6: A painting of a man fishing the Niger.
But the Niger River needs your help to stay as beautiful as it currently is. Increased logging, fishing, and sewage dumping has led to many concerns, especially that the river will dump tons of sewage and garbage from Nigerian factories into the Atlantic. Also, there has been over-fishing and by-catch all throughout the inner delta, an area filled with fish. However, the number of fish in the delta since 1950 has gone down 10%. If this keeps up, soon, the Niger River will be a wasteland. And the water will not be fit to drink. This is only the case in Nigeria, which is the farthest downstream, and the area with the worst environmental stress. The President has started the proccess of dredging, which would murk up the river and kill many fish. Finally, more and more junk being thrown into the river near its source is finding it's way downstream and killing animals. So help, and don't ever litter in the river.
